Summary: Embracing God’s nudges, I reconsider my daily hygiene rituals. A hairdresser’s advice and a newspaper article prompt me to rethink excessive cleansing. Fear of smelling and societal rejection tugs at me. Yet, reducing toxins and inflammation beckons. It’s a leap towards health and authenticity, one brave step at a time.

God has been talking to me today.  Well, actually He’s been nagging a bit…  What can I say?!  I don’t listen too well sometimes!!

God has been talking to me about toxins.  Yep, that’s right, toxins!  In particular, what I am exposing my body to each day.  I do what the average human being does…  I keep myself clean.  I shower each morning.  Shampoo, conditioner, shower gel.  Well, yesterday I went to the hairdressers just to get my hair all tidied up – my fringe had got so long I’m not sure I was still complying with the legal requirement to be able to see when driving!!  Whilst there, my hairdresser told me to stop washing my hair everyday.  Too many products are not good for hair, apparently!  She explained that she only washes her hair once a week and then explained to me how I could stretch the time between washes.  She explained to me that my hair gets greasy quickly because shampoo and conditioner (and any other products one might use) dry out the hair so the scalp produces more oil to replenish it what has been taken out.  The more you wash, the more your hair needs to create more oil to replace it and the greasier your hair gets!  The result – one greasy clump of hair and a big bill in hair products!  An interesting thought.
Then, this morning, my husband randomly hands me a newspaper article that he’d read and thought I might find interesting.  It discusses how washing your body with soap daily is not only bad for the skin but may contribute to inflammation.  Okay, now I’m listening!!  When synchronicity hits my life, I sit up and pay attention!    So, to reduce the allostatic load in my system, to reduce the level of inflammation, I need to stop doing things that are aggravating my body and causing it to work harder.  So it looks like all those beautiful sweet-smelling products have to go.

The problem is…  I’m paranoid about turning into a smelly and slightly repulsive example of a human being.  I worry that, when I sweat, I smell.  I don’t like looking dishevelled or unclean.  It taps straight into a place of paranoia for me.  Will I be outcast from civilised society for turning away from my bar of soap?  Well, there’s only one way to find out.  I have agreed with myself that I will strive to live bravely in each moment of my life.  This is the next step on that path.  Let’s see how it goes.
